The State of Editing (AI, Accessibility and Conscious Language) – A Roundtable Discussion (10:00 a.m. – 12 p.m., ET)

Representatives from editing organizations around the English-speaking world come together for a roundtable discussion about how AI tools, accessibility practices and conscious language are changing editing, writing, communication and our day-to-day lives. This roundtable is held by Editors Canada in collaboration with the Editorial Freelancers Association, The Indigenous Editors Association, ACES: The Society for Editing, The Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, The Institute of Professional Editors and The Professional Editors Guild. Each presenter will give a ten-minute long talk on current issues in editing. The remaining time will be dedicated to discussion led by questions from the presenters and the audience.

Lunch Break (12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., ET)

Hidden subjects: Language, Responsibility, and Editorial Ethics (1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., ET)

This co-presented session will explore how passive voice shapes meaning, power, and perception. We’ll review a range of texts, including examples from journalism and scholarly work, and examine how editorial decisions can either clarify or conceal subjects — and how these choices intersect with the ethical principles outlined in the Professional Editorial Standards. We’ll also look at related linguistic mechanisms, such as euphemisms and ergative constructions, and how they can create or reinforce bias by assigning or denying responsibility for specific actions and decisions.

Introduction to the Publishing Process for Editors (2:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m., ET)

For editors who may be interested in crossing the floor to become authors, this webinar will walk you through the process from manuscript submission (including a brief overview of book proposal development) through to the editing process (substantive and copy) from the author side as well as the marketing required after your book is published. Based on the author’s first experience publishing her non-fiction book The Feisty Freelancer with a traditional publisher, the webinar will pass along lessons learned and tips for success.

News Editing in Canada – A Roundtable Discussion (4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., ET)

Publications aimed at covering news on a local or national scale are increasingly discussing international relations. Andrea Houston from Ricochet Media, Jen St. Denis from The Tyee, Dafna Izenberg from The Walrus, and Dave Gray-Donald from The Grind will speak to the changing landscape of news editing in Canada and how this has affected newsroom practices such as fact-checking, generating headlines, recruiting writers, and curating publication topics.
