Editors from publications across Canada will speak of their experience navigating the newsroom during unprecedented times.In the 2020s, news organizations have covered affordability crises, colonial conflicts, environmental catastrophes, public health disasters, international tariff and trade relations and more. Publications aimed at covering news on a local or national scale are increasingly discussing international relations. Andrea Houston from Ricochet Media, Jen St. Denis from The Tyee, Dafna Izenberg from The Walrus, and Dave Gray-Donald from The Grind will speak to the changing landscape of news editing in Canada and how this has affected newsroom practices such as fact-checking, generating headlines, recruiting writers, and curating publication topics. The roundtable will begin with 40 minutes of presentations, followed by 45 minutes of Q&A from the event host and the audience.

Jen St. Denis is an award-winning reporter and editor at The Tyee. She previously worked as a reporter for the Star Vancouver, Business in Vancouver and CTV, and her work has also appeared in the Toronto Star and South China Morning Post.
Ricochet Media
Andrea Houston has spent more than two decades as a journalist, human rights advocate, and journalism instructor. Andrea is the managing editor of Ricochet Media. She is also an instructor at Toronto Metropolitan University School of Journalism, where she developed and teaches Canada’s first-ever Queer Media course. She also advocates for the Canadian journalism industry as a board member of Press Forward Canada, a member organization bringing together small and medium sized publishers in Canada. She’s also on the board of the National Newspaper Awards.

Dafna Izenberg is a features editor at The Walrus. She has also worked as an editor at Maclean’s, Chatelaine, Sportsnet, Today’s Parent and Healthy Debate.

Dave Gray-Donald is the publisher and editorial director of The Grind. Coverage of Palestine and the Palestine solidarity movement in Toronto has been a significant part of his work since 2023. Previously, he mainly covered climate justice issues and also worked as publisher of Briarpatch Magazine.
